So what are you doing to rid your garden or back yard of these unwelcome "guests"?

There are many good quality products available to buy online that can make a huge difference to your outdoor space by decimating mosquito numbers effectively and leaving you and your family and friends to enjoy the worm summer evenings outdoors.

While some products still use pesticides, there are many more that don't and can be safely placed in gardens where they will attract and kill mosquitoes without endangering children or pets.

This page takes a look at some of these products and offers examples that can be purchased online and represent great value in terms of low purchase cost compared with the hugely positive results they produce.

Why Mosquitoes Are After You!

As the sun goes down in the evening and the light begins to fade, hoards of mosquitoes take to the air in search of a mate. The males are searching for the females and following an airborne courtship, the females then go off in search of a meal of blood to enable them to lay their eggs.

Mosquitoes are not too fussy about where they get their meal and all manner of animals are on their menu, including humans. They are attracted to their live victims by a mixture of the scent produced in sweat, body heat and the carbon dioxide that is exhaled by all animals.

It is only the female mosquito that bites and draws blood through its long proboscis after first puncturing the skin of its victim to locate a blood vessel and then injecting a mild dose of a compound that reduces the sensitivity of the skin. That's why we are almost never aware of a mosquito biting us until it has already done the dirty deed and takes off to fly away to safety.

What You Can Do To Avoid Being Bitten

You can guard against being bitten by using a propriety repellent such those containing deet. Or you can rely on more natural methods of dissuading the pesky little winged bloodsuckers such as strong citrus or lavender oils rubbed into the skin.

There are also citrus and lavender scented candles you can burn that will also keep them at bay, or you could try growing one of the plants that have particularly strong night scented flowers that will help to keep mosquitoes away.

Unfortunately, few deterrents work 100% of the time and even with the strongest chemical repellents, the odd persistent mosquito will get through.

Controlling Numbers

By far one of the most effective way of avoiding being bitten by a mozzie is to ensure that their numbers are kept as low as possible. This can be done by using a variety of measures.

There are products and devices designed to kill as many mozzies as possible. One such device is the mosquito magnet. This works by attracting the flying pests using a cocktail of scents designed to mimic a live animal. It then uses a vacuum system to suck them out of the air and kill them by dehydration in an enclosed bag from which they cannot escape.

Prevention is Better than Cure

Of course the best and most effective method is to prevent mosquito eggs being laid and hatched in the first place. As female mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water, you should go around your property and make sure there are no pockets of still water they can use at hatcheries.

The volume of water doesn't need to be very much. So small items such as flowerpot saucers, bird baths, hollow rocks, broken cinder blocks, old tires and buckets as well as larger areas of still water such as ornamental fish ponds can be perfect places to rear mosquito larvae.

When you clear your yard of all places where water can collect and remain stagnant for a few days, you will deprive mosquitoes of lying their eggs and greatly reduce their numbers before they have a chance to multiply.
